Authentic Colombian Dishes – Platos Typicos

Authentic Colombian dishes are served every day.

Bandeja Paisa – (Country Dish) - Un plato de porciones generosas que contiene; fréjoles, arroz blanco, plátano maduro, carne de res, huevo, chicharrón, chorizo, aguacate y arepa.  This is a large plate of food. It contains beans, white rice, beef, sweet fried fried plantain, a fried egg, pork cracklings, sausage, a slice of avocado and an arepa.

About: First you must know that the word “paisa” is an abbreviation of the word paisano, meaning countryman.  It’s an affectionate term used for people of the state of Antioquia, the Coffee-Growers Axis (Caldas Department, Quindio, Risaralda) and part of Valle del Cauca.  This dish is huge because the “paisas” like everything big and extravagant, compare them to Texans.  Bandeja Paisa is not found in Colombian recipe books before 1950.  In 2005 the Bandeja Paisa was named Colombias national dish by the Colombian government with a new name, Bandeja Montañera (mountain dish).  We still call it Bandeja Paisa.

Carne Asada Colombiana – (Grilled Top Sirloin) – Servida sobre una arepa con arroz, plátano maduro y ensalada.  Grilled steak served over an arepa, rice, fried sweet plantain and salad.

About: this steak technically translates to barbecued steak.  The meat is marinated in secret Colombian herbs, spices and seasoning and then grilled.  The pieces of meat are thin so the meat has to be cooked with care.  The presentation is what grabs peoples attention.  It is placed over a giant arepa (cornmeal and cheese flattened cake).  The presentation is traditional of Bogota, Colombia.

Sobrebarriga En Salsa – (Flank Steak in sauce) - Servida con arroz, yuca, plátano madura y ensalada. Flank steak served in a delicious tomato sauce accompanied by white rice, cassava, fried sweet plantain and a salad.

About: Flank steak is very popular in many parts of Colombia.  What makes this dish amazing is the red sauce.  It’s not exactly tomato sauce, although there is tomato in it.  Every mom in Colombia has their own signature sauce for this dish.

Bistec A Caballo – (Steak riding on horseback) - Guisado en salsa de tomate y cebolla. Servido con arroz, yuca, huevo, ensalada y arepa. Grilled steak sauteed in tomato sauce and onion. Served with rice, cassava, an egg, salad, and an arepa.

About: The origin of the name is unknown to us, if you know please let us know.  The steak has an egg riding on top of it, that’s as far as we know.  It’s kinda like steak and eggs but with the over-easy egg placed on top of the steak.
